From a Radio Program You Listen To, to a Radio Station You Come to and Talk At
A mini FM radio station was established in an empty shop space in Toride Ino Housing Estate, where informal conversations among local residents were broadcast live as they took place.
Mini FM broadcasting uses low-power radio waves and is characterized by its limited transmission range. Rather than creating radio programs for people to listen to, we invited them to visit the studio and talk. The station was conceived as a place where people could gather and speak around a well installed at the center of the studio.
In the past, wells were used to secure water for daily life. During Japan’s period of rapid economic growth (around the 1950s and 1960s), as large numbers of public housing estates were built in suburban areas, most wells were replaced by municipal water supply systems. The informal conversations that took place among residents as they gathered to draw water from the wells—known in Japanese as *idobata kaigi*—gradually disappeared along with the wells themselves. As a result, community ties in suburban neighborhoods became increasingly fragmented.
In response, FM Yume Danchi installed a temporary well in the studio and began broadcasting around it, in an attempt to bring the tradition of *idobata kaigi* back to the housing estate.
Throughout the exhibition, everyday conversations were broadcast live, bringing together residents of Ino Housing Estate and its surrounding neighborhoods, artists participating in the art project, and exhibition visitors. At the suggestion of local residents, the station also aired a wide variety of programs, including broadcasts of residents sharing their wartime experiences, harmonica performances, and readings of school assignments.
As a spin-off project, we invited Yuka Yamashita, who was then a composition student at Tokyo University of the Arts and a resident of Toride, to form the Yume Danchi Choir. In collaboration with *Bunbunchō*, a workshop led by fellow participating artist Atsushi Miyata, the choir wrote lyrics and created an original choral piece titled *Koko ni Aru Kono Uchi* (Our Home Is Here).
The Yume Danchi Choir continued its activities even after the exhibition ended, continuing to rehearse the song *Koko ni Aru Kono Uchi*.
