D'où venons-nous? Que sommes-nous? Où allons-nous?
D'où venons-nous ? Que sommes-nous ? Où allons-nous ?
This phrase is a quotation from Paul Gauguin’s painting Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going? (1897–1898).
Paul Gauguin was a white man from France. He painted this work in Tahiti while grieving the loss of his beloved daughter and struggling with deteriorating physical and mental health. Although Gauguin resisted traditional European values, he lived in a colonized land.
I feel that this painting evokes the masculinity and power structures of art, as well as the relationships between labor and play, creation and care, and the individual and society.

I grew up in an unremarkable residential neighborhood in Maebashi, Gunma Prefecture. The Tone River flowed close to our home, and along its riverbanks were gravel processing plants and material storage yards. The concrete pipes and piles of sand left there were perfect playgrounds for children. Without giving it much thought, I had always assumed these places were abandoned ruins. Even today, I sometimes hear the distinctive sounds I remember from my childhood, so I assume they are still in operation, although I have rarely seen them actually working. Of course, I never met the people who worked there. I knew nothing about where the stones came from, where they went, or what they were used for. I had never been interested in finding out.
Inspired by stories of Korean workers who once worked in mines, Today's Playground is a workshop in which participants manually crush stones into sand to create a sandbox. The aim is to gradually break large rocks down into tiny grains of sand, then dig a tunnel through a mound formed in the sandbox.
Following the artist's instructions, participants scrape away at stones and break them into smaller pieces by striking them with tools, gradually producing sand and carrying it to the sandbox. Through labor (Labor) associated with arduous activities such as quarrying and mining, participants engage in the making of an artwork (Work), attempting to connect this process to a space for play, a fundamental human activity (Action).
Digging a tunnel through a mound of sand may be one of those childhood games that almost everyone has experienced. Play is something that wells up from within the individual who plays, without being directed or compelled by anyone else. Can play emerge from work that is imposed under the name of a workshop?

Art Squiggle Yokohama 2024 (アートスクイグルヨコハマ 2024 )
